Eleanor Clift book signing April 6

In March of 2005, Plain Dealer columnist Tom Brazaitis was at home in the final weeks of his battle with kidney cancer. At the same time, a brain-dead woman in Florida, Terry Schiavo, was making headlines in a very public battle over her life and death.

Tom's wife, Eleanor Clift, weaves their stories in "Two Weeks of Life," a book about death and dying and how America copes, or doesn't cope.

The Press Club is sponsoring a book signing at Night Town from 3-5 on Sunday, April 6.

Helen Moise is taking a headcount, so give her a call at 216-295-5618, preferably in the morning. (She says she is up at 5:30 but if you call then, you might catch her in the shower, so leave a message.)

Books will be available for sale.

Nan Barnhouse died Sunday. The PD's obit writer, Alana Baranak, is looking for stories to liven up her obit, which she expects to write Wednesday.

Nan's lawyer sent Alana this info: 

Nancy "Nan" June Barnhouse, age 80, of Shaker Heights, OH passed away Sunday (Mar. 2, 2008) at her residence.

She was born Dec. 13, 1927 in Caldwell, OH a daughter of the late Carlos B. and Enid M. Keith Barnhouse.

She enjoyed traveling and was employed for the Cleveland Plain Dealer Newspaper as a writer.

Nan will be greatly missed by all those who had a chance to know her.

In keeping with Nan's wishes a cremation will be performed and her
cremated remains will be placed onto her parents graves in Keithtown
Cemetery, in Keithtown, Ohio, the area founded by her mother's family.

Chandler Funeral Home, 609 West Street, Caldwell, OH 43724 has been entrusted to handle the arrangements.

BOOK SALE IS COMING

Hey PD retirees, you're invited:
The Jo Ann Pallant Commemorative Book Sale will be Thursday, Dec. 6,
from 3-5:30 p.m. in the Plain Dealer's community room on the 2d floor.
On Friday, Dec. 7, books will be half-price, from 9-a.m. to noon.

The sale features the books that editorial departments part with
most reluctantly: -- classics and cookbooks, novels and
bound collections, history and poetry, as well as CDs,
DVDs, games and movies.

Hundreds of children's
titles, both picture and chapter books, and an especially
rich selection of coffee table books will be available.

There will be a box at the check-out for donated books
to William Cullen Bryant School in Cleveland.

Proceeds go to the United Way.

Book Editor Karen Long says:
"It remains a pleasure seeing so many books off to good homes."

PD retirees, alumni, spouses and present Plain Dealer staffers gather every 3 months for lunch on the last Friday of the month at a restaurant determined by the organizers, Richard Ellers, JoAnn Pallant and Janet Beigle French.

Those who attended the recent Nighttown lunch received a survey to help plan future lunches.

Those who didn't can still respond.

What price range do you prefer?
Do you have particular diet requirements?
Would you consider any day other than Friday?
Do you have restaurant suggestions?
If so, would you check on whether there is a room charge (which can be substantial) or a minimum per-person charge for a group?

Snyder-man needs some cheer

Remember Bob Snyder? He was a former Columbus bureau chief, asst. managing editor, reporter,etc, at the PD a while ago. During one of the various purges he left and went to Crain's as managing editor. He's retired from the Electric Institute in Columbus where the late Gerry Minery was his boss.

Bob's had some tough times lately because of health issues with diabetes and recently had spinal surgery with complication. He's at Highbanks Care Center, 111 Lazelle Rd, Columbus, OH 43235 and will be there for a while.

He's getting very bored, needless to say, and would love to hear from old friends. Cards, etc. would be a big boost. (Oct. 14, 2007)

PD Alumni, retirees and expatriates:
Your invitations to the October lunch should have arrived. It will be Friday, Oct. 26, 2007 at noon at Nighttown, 12387 Cedar Rd, Cleveland Heights. Lunch will be $20.50 for a choice of roasted duck breast salad, dublin lawyer (lobster and mushrooms) and chevre chicken.
