Donald Leander Bean, bean like in lima bean, died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 19, 2010, at Parma Community Hospital. He had been in the hospital about a week or so with pneumonia and congestive heart failure. They were planning to transfer him to Metro General but he didn't make it. Services are pending.
They don't make 'em like Bean anymore. Bring on the stories. Big Jaw Jackson. Johnny Pot. The plane crash that wasn't. The mother of the unknown soldier assignment. All those Guild meetings, Stand up, Bean.
Here's a shot John Tidyman took of him golfing about 2 weeks ago. Played better than ever, he said.

I worked in the old PD newsroom (1986-1991) and then in the Lorain Bureau (2000-2005);
Some of the most memorable years were in the old downtown office. There, I sat very near Mary Strassmeyer and The Don Bean; their desks were next to each other – so much the better for nagging each other. They were constantly bickering, chattering and chortling. “Oh, Gawd,” Mary would snark at him. “Judas Priest!” he’d reply; and, of course, the ever present yell from all of us at union meetings, “Stand Up, Don!” and sometimes he’d perch on a chair in the front row.
I remember Don always answering his phone: The Don Bean. I also remember him as a patient mentor to cub reporters. They don’t make them like him anymore – he was a character, a wonderful character and great person. What wonderful memories he has left us.
Best,
Catherine Gabe
As one of the original crew for the Editorial Retiree lunches, we were glad that Don Bean missed few, if any, of our quarterly get togethers..
Your ears could follow Don around the room, with his hearty " hellos," , and the laughs of his listeners to his yarns about City Room Past.
